CRANE: A Temporary Monument in Five Movements
Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, San Francisco | October 9, 10, 16 & 17, 2026
CRANE transforms the Shipyard’s nearly 500-foot gantry crane into a temporary public monument through projected archival photographs, moving light, original music and community voices. Unfolding in five movements, the work honors generations of Shipyard workers, especially the African American families who helped build Bayview Hunters Point.
As CRANE’s lead historian, Stacey Carter brings decades of Shipyard research, her photographic archive and ongoing work with Bayview seniors to the project. Created in collaboration with Ian Winters, Elaine Buckholtz, Evelyn Ficarra and William Rhodes, the work combines archival imagery, oral histories, spoken word performances by Bayview seniors and singing by the Dr. George W. Davis Senior Center Choir to bring the Shipyard’s people and stories into view at monumental scale.
Presented by Shipyard Trust for the Arts (STAR), CRANE is the culminating event of the San Francisco Arts Commission’s 2026 Shaping Legacy season of temporary monuments.
Experience the work: All four performances stream free at crane.video. Ticketed watch parties take place October 9 at Zaccho Dance Theatre and October 16–17 at Hunters Point Shipyard Artists Building 101. Performances begin at 7:45 p.m.

Continuous City is an immersive installation that allows travelers to see themselves reflected in San Francisco’s dynamic past and present. The artists curated historic photographs and contemporary architectural elements then recombined them to capture the essence of San Francisco. The resulting effect is a vibrant and imaginative urban landscape that allows visitors to experience the city’s unique and diverse culture through its architectural history.
The artwork is located in the new post-security connector walkway between Terminals 2 & 3 at San Francisco International Airport.
